March for Climate, Jobs, Justice 2018: Workshops prepare us to RISE 9/8
AUGUST 22, 2018. from Gwendolyn Alley's ArtPredator Blog

What’s this graph about you wonder? At Palmer Station Antarctica, starting in late July 2018, severe fissuring of the glacial sheet was equal to a magnitude 6 earthquake. What normally takes several hundred years occurred in one day in a section a little larger than Connecticut. This glacier helps lock down the others in place. Summer is coming to Antarctica and It’s already melted about 400 million tonnes of glacier.

So what are you going to do about climate change and global warming while we still can?

On the following day, Sunday Sept 9, there’s FREE art activism workshops plus a film screening of the award-winning documentary, Little Stones. Weaving together the personal narratives of four women who are using art – fashion, street-art, hip-hop, and dance – to challenge gender-based violence and empower women and girls around the world. Following the film, learn how YOU can use art to impact change using design, movement, or spoken word. Full workshop schedule coming soon! Sponsored by, Bell Arts Factory, Ojai NOW, The Girls Girl Club, The Acorn Project, The Coalition for Family Harmony, Buenaventura Arts Association, Ventura County Women’s Forum, and Justice for All.

This Sunday is a busy day for activitivists. In addition to the art workshops related to the Climate March in Oxnard and Santa Barbara, in the morning is a workshop on environmental justice and in the afternoon a protest about Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court.

From 1130-1230, learn what the Black Lives Matter movement has to do with the Environment? when Prof. David Pellow connect the dots on the relationship between Social Justice and Environmental Sustainability at Ventura Unitarian Universalist Church.

Pellow argues that the battle for global sustainability cannot be won without addressing the ecological violence imposed on many human populations, and thus justice for humans is inseparable from environmental protection.

A big “Aha” from listening to him is recognizing that environmental justice struggles exist within spaces of conflict and collaboration that are not always typically defined as “environmental.”

Recently featured on KCLU, Dr. David Pellow is the author of What is Critical Environmental Justice?, Dr. David Naguib Pellow is Professor of Environmental Studies and Director of the Global Environmental Justice Project at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

His vision of what an environmentally and socially just and sustainable future might look like at a local, regional, national and global scale will leave the audience feeling hopeful. For more information, contact Kathleen Wheeler at kawheeler100@gmail.com.

This presentation is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by UUCV’s Adult Programs Department and Seventh Principle Environmental Action Team. More information about the Unitarian Universalist Church and its programs are available at uuventura.org. The church is located at 5654 Ralston Street in Ventura.

Also on August 26, all across the country, Americans will stand united in commitment to our freedom and our future to demand that the U.S. Senate stop Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination for a lifelong appointment to the Supreme Court. Sign up here. Locally, meet at 4pm at the Ventura County Government Center at the corner Victoria and Telephone.

Why? According to MoveOn, “No one is above the law, but the nominee to become the next Supreme Court Justice does not believe this foundational tenet of American democracy. Kavanaugh has been selected for the position by current administration solely because of his wrongheaded heresy. Brett Kavanaugh has suggested that Richard Nixon should have been able to keep his notorious tapes secret — and that he may have disagreed with the unanimous 8-0 Supreme Court ruling to compel Nixon to release the tapes because it may have violated Nixon’s executive privilege. He’s a judge who has argued that presidents can be above the law—but we believe Nobody Is Above The Law. Is it any coincidence that Trump, who is at the center of a criminal investigation and who on this very day is making headlines today for his own secret recordings, nominated a man who thinks the president should be above the law to the Supreme Court? And that’s just the start of it — Kavanagh is an extremist opposed to the Roe decision and the Affordable Care act, to name a few. Trump wants to pick his own judge and jury — this cannot be allowed. WE MUST STAND TOGETHER TO DEFEAT THIS NOMINATION & DEFEND JUSTICE!”
