March for Climate, Jobs, Justice 2018: Workshops prepare us to RISE 9/8

What’s this graph about you wonder? At Palmer Station Antarctica, starting in late July 2018, severe fissuring of the glacial sheet was equal to a magnitude 6 earthquake. What normally takes several hundred years occurred in one day in a section a little larger than Connecticut. This glacier helps lock down the others in place. Summer is coming to Antarctica and It’s already melted about 400 million tonnes of glacier.
So what are you going to do about climate change and global warming while we still can?
JUMP ON THE BUS with a dynamic group of activists for the Rise For Climate March in San Francisco on Saturday, September 8th. Take part in street art, music, chants and merriment as we demand government leaders take action on global warming. Details below on how to get on the bus! ‘

In preparation for these events, this weekend, join an Artbuild in on Saturday in Ventura or on Sunday in Isla Vista with arts organizer David Solnit. We will be screen printing, painting flags and banners, and planning a street mural for the Sept 8th CA Rise for Climate march. Great way to meet people before the event! There’s also an Art Build in Oxnard
3-5 pm RISE ARTS training and production of signs and banners with infamous artivist David Solnit on tour (all materials provided!)
5 pm David will teach us how to make a street mural to bring to San Francisco for the big March on September 8
Dinner. Bring your supper, OR, bring something to share for potluck buffet with your plate and fork; we’ll at least have beans, rice, & homemade kombucha and lemonade for all.
7:30-9 pm The Peace Poets on tour for RISE ARTS will do an outdoor concert preparing us with songs and chants about rising for climate, jobs and justice.
The purpose of the RISE ARTS CALIFORNIA TOUR is to mobilize for the historic Rise for Climate Jobs and Justice March in SF on Sat. Sept. 8. Stopping in Ventura on 8/25 and in Isla Vista on 8/26, touring artivists will lead sign, flag and banner-making (with all materials provided) and how to plan, coordinate, and paint a street mural in preparation for helping paint the world’s largest street mural in SF on 9/8.
Touring with long-time artivist from the Bay Area David Solnit are The Peace Poets, the foremost grassroots movement song group from the Bronx, NY, with roots in the immigrant rights movement, sharing and teaching their mix of singing, hip hop, and spoken word for a better world. If you can’t make the Art-Maker Event, there is a Rise Arts Toolkit with new design ideas for DIY signs and flags for Sept 8. https://riseforclimate.org/rise-art/
The street mural training will be in the parking lot under the oil well just across the bike trail up the Ventura Avenue near highway 33. The Peace Poets will perform in the driveway to The Bugfarm near the mural layout activity. Parking is therefore limited near The Bugfarm.

In Oxnard CA, join the Rise Art Build for Climate Justice at the Dr. Manuel M. Lopez Community Garden on Sunday August 26 from 2-7pm.

Poets, visual artists, performers, and musicians tare invited to share in an open flow session and to prepare songs and chants about rising for climate, jobs and justice. This Sunday is a busy day for activitivists. In addition to the art workshops related to the Climate March in Oxnard and Santa Barbara, in the morning is a workshop on environmental justice and in the afternoon a protest about Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court.
From 1130-1230, learn what the Black Lives Matter movement has to do with the Environment? when Prof. David Pellow connect the dots on the relationship between Social Justice and Environmental Sustainability at Ventura Unitarian Universalist Church.
Pellow argues that the battle for global sustainability cannot be won without addressing the ecological violence imposed on many human populations, and thus justice for humans is inseparable from environmental protection.
A big “Aha” from listening to him is recognizing that environmental justice struggles exist within spaces of conflict and collaboration that are not always typically defined as “environmental.”
Recently featured on KCLU, Dr. David Pellow is the author of What is Critical Environmental Justice?, Dr. David Naguib Pellow is Professor of Environmental Studies and Director of the Global Environmental Justice Project at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Kavanaugh has been selected for the position by current administration solely because of his wrongheaded heresy. Brett Kavanaugh has suggested that Richard Nixon should have been able to keep his notorious tapes secret — and that he may have disagreed with the unanimous 8-0 Supreme Court ruling to compel Nixon to release the tapes because it may have violated Nixon’s executive privilege. He’s a judge who has argued that presidents can be above the law—but we believe Nobody Is Above The Law. Is it any coincidence that Trump, who is at the center of a criminal investigation and who on this very day is making headlines today for his own secret recordings, nominated a man who thinks the president should be above the law to the Supreme Court? And that’s just the start of it — Kavanagh is an extremist opposed to the Roe decision and the Affordable Care act, to name a few. Trump wants to pick his own judge and jury — this cannot be allowed. WE MUST STAND TOGETHER TO DEFEAT THIS NOMINATION & DEFEND JUSTICE!”
